After graduation, you (the F-1 student) may continue to graduate or post-graduate school, return to your country or work in the United States under the optional practical training program for a year.

You can get up to one year of practical training work authorization (referred to as OPT or Optional Practical Training) after the completion of your studies, OPT can start either during the academic program or after completion of your degree program. It provides valuable opportunities to obtain work experience in the United States. It enables you to work for any employer, provided the job is related to your program of study.

Under the optional training program you are allowed to live and work for a year in the United States after graduation with INS authorization. This optional training must be completed within a fourteen month period following your graduation. For more information on this program, contact your international student advisor or your international student office.

During this training period, you may be able to find a company or business that may sponsor you for an H-1 visa. This work visa will allow you to stay and work in the United States for three years. The visa can be renewed for up to six years.

Grace Period

Students are allowed a "grace period" of sixty days following completion of studies, or end of authorized post completion practical training, to leave the United States. During this period, the student is considered to be maintaining valid status. Therefore the student is eligible to seek a change of nonimmigrant classification (for example, to H-1B status) provided the application is submitted before the sixty day period expires.
